Describe a “day in the life of” an EMT
As an EMS provider, we come to work at 7 a.m. and go home the following morning at 7 a.m. Our first responsibility is to make sure our ambulance and equipment are in good working order. This requires a fair amount of cleaning and maintenance.

Whenever someone calls 911 for an ambulance, we respond. We take care of our patients and our patient’s families as best and as quickly and safely as we can. We work closely with other agencies like the Health Department, the Board of Education, Social Services, the fire departments as well as town, county and state police agencies, just to name a few. We transport regularly to five different hospitals and occasionally to as many as 14. Our call volume is very busy some days and we help everyone from back pain, the flu or broken bones to heart attacks, strokes and electrocutions.

When we’re not on an emergency and we have some “down time,” we complete our administrative responsibilities, which includes our patient care reports as well as on-line training programs. We have good days when we know we’ve truly made a difference in someone’s life. We have really bad days when no matter how hard we try, we can’t make a difference and someone dies. We work 365 days a year, which means we don’t always get to spend holidays with our families, but we love our job and making a difference when we can and that is very rewarding.
